Before she could finish, Nan Shiqing interrupted her directly. “He has a severe obsession with cleanliness. He never lets me touch him, but today, when I touched his shoulder, his body was particularly stiff, yet he didn't stop me. It seemed he was only forcing himself to endure it because Mu Yinyin was present, allowing me to give that massage.”

He Xia frowned, her voice sinking. “That little wretch must die!”

Nan Shiqing’s eyes flickered in surprise. She spoke, somewhat taken aback, “You’ve already thought of a way?”

He Xia sighed. “I hadn’t planned to do anything to her before, was willing to let her live like a stray dog, but now she’s risen too quickly, and she’s already becoming a great threat to us.”

Nan Shiqing’s eyes grew even brighter. After all, taking a life was not something new to them; the fear of the first time had long since vanished.

She even sounded expectant. “So, Mom, what are you going to do? When will you act?”

“I’ll make a call first.”

Night fell.

Mu Yinyin had just left the company.

She’d been working overtime all day, holding meetings with her staff for hours. Aside from a few shareholders who opposed her proposals, the rest of the employees were rather obedient. She wasn’t a harsh leader, so her staff didn’t feel especially anxious. On the contrary, many thought Mu Yinyin was an excellent leader.

Now, Mu Yinyin had reached the underground parking lot.

Just as she unlocked her car with her key, a voice sounded beside her.

“Yinyin.”

Mu Yinyin turned and saw Jiang Ling walking toward her, a little surprised. “You’re still here?”

Jiang Ling’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Yes.”

He knew she hadn’t left, still holding a meeting with her department, so...

“It’s late. Let me give you a ride,” Jiang Ling suggested, his gentle smile warm as jade, causing no pressure at all—if anything, he made people feel at ease.

Especially the scar at the corner of his eye—it didn’t disfigure him, but instead made him look like someone with deep experience.

Mu Yinyin immediately shook her head with a smile. “It’s getting late. I’m fine on my own. If you take me, you’ll have to go far out of your way.”

“It’s no trouble. Besides, it’s been a long time since we had a good talk.” Jiang Ling had already closed the distance between them.

Mu Yinyin’s gaze sharpened slightly and she shook her head at once. “Jiang Ling, really, there’s no need.”

These few words were all she said, but the meaning was clear.

Jiang Ling paused, a hint of disappointment passing through his eyes, and he couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh. “Are you still avoiding me?”

Once, indeed, he had confessed to her, but after Mu Yinyin rejected him, he knew he had no chance. Now, he only wanted to protect her, simply to stay by her side.

Mu Yinyin pressed her lips together, exhaling softly before she spoke. “Jiang Ling, I really can manage by myself. You don’t need to drive me.”

She didn’t say anything more, but her meaning was unmistakable.

Jiang Ling’s eyes darkened, and he finally sighed. “It’s really late tonight, and I’m worried about you driving alone. I have a strange feeling—something doesn’t seem right.”

Mu Yinyin chuckled softly. “You’re doubting my driving skills? Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. You should head home early, too.”

With that, Mu Yinyin didn’t look at Jiang Ling again. She got into the driver’s seat and started the car.

Jiang Ling’s expression turned serious as he watched her turn the steering wheel, then he got into his own car.

It was now half past ten in the evening. The sky was already black, but the streetlights shone especially bright.

Mu Yinyin drove alone, not playing any music. The car was unusually quiet.

She kept her eyes on the road, focused on driving, thinking about nothing else.

When she reached an intersection and saw the red light, she slowed to a stop, rubbing her forehead.

Her nerves had been taut all day; she was indeed a bit tired.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated. Mu Yinyin glanced at the red light—it still had over a hundred seconds left. She checked the caller ID.

It was He Xia.

She raised an eyebrow and answered.

Before she could speak, He Xia’s gentle voice came through, “Yinyin, it’s so late—are you asleep yet?”

Mu Yinyin’s expression remained calm. “Is something the matter?”

He Xia sighed softly. “Yinyin, are you free tomorrow? Come home for dinner. I’ll make all your favorite dishes.”

He Xia still remembered what Mu Yinyin liked to eat; after all, she had done much to please this father and daughter pair back then.

Mu Yinyin gave a cold laugh. “Are you planning to transfer the shares to me, or is there something else?”

He Xia’s eyes were filled with venom.

Transfer the shares?

Mu Yinyin could dream on!

He Xia had schemed, even at the cost of Mu Yinyin’s father’s life, to get those shares—how could she possibly let Mu Yinyin take them back?

What a joke!

After a pause, He Xia sighed. “Yinyin, I’ve told you before, I was only worried that you and Shiqing were too young to handle things, so I didn’t give you the shares. All this will be yours and your sister’s someday. I can’t take it all to the grave with me, can I?”

Her tone wasn’t sharp; on the contrary, she sounded deeply helpless and sad, as if Mu Yinyin had abandoned her, causing her nothing but grief.

“Get to the point. What do you want?” Mu Yinyin had no interest in listening to emotional manipulation.

The light turned green. Mu Yinyin continued driving.

Through the car’s Bluetooth, He Xia’s sorrowful voice still sounded.

“I’ve thought it through, Yinyin. Come home for dinner tomorrow. I’ll transfer the shares to you. You’re capable now, and I believe you can handle it.”

Mu Yinyin narrowed her eyes. Something was off about this woman.

He Xia volunteering to hand over all the shares—no one would believe that.

But she was using this as bait to lure her back. Mu Yinyin couldn’t figure out what He Xia’s real purpose was.

What did they stand to gain by having her return?

Mu Yinyin’s expression stayed calm, betraying no emotion.

Perhaps because she hadn’t replied, He Xia spoke again. “Yinyin, are you listening?”

“I’m busy.”

Just those two words, and nothing more.

But she didn’t hang up, still trying to figure out what He Xia was plotting.

There was a distinct note of testing in her words.

He Xia sighed at once. “Yinyin, I know I must have hurt you before, but please don’t hold it against me. As for you and Fu Siye, we’ll find a way to bring you together. Shiqing would never try to take your place. Please, don’t misunderstand your sister.”

Your sister.

Those three words were spoken with heavy emphasis, as if to remind Mu Yinyin to value their family ties.

Mu Yinyin suddenly gave a cold laugh.

She had already driven a block away, turning on her signal.

The next stretch of road wasn’t the main street—this way was closer to home, so Mu Yinyin usually drove this route. The only drawback was that the road was narrow, and on both sides were deep pits, clearly still under construction.
