Chapter 16: Will I Continue Waiting for You?
He paid no attention to the nonsense He Xia was spouting; all he cared about now was how she had managed to get her hands on that Ferrari.
He Xia was momentarily taken aback. “Huh?”
Wasn’t this car a gift from Fu Siyue? Why would Fu Siyue ask such a question now? So where did the car really come from?
Seeing Fu Siyue’s expression darken further, He Xia’s lashes trembled slightly. “Maybe she bought it herself, with the money you gave her?”
After all, Mu Yinyin was Mrs. Fu; surely she would have received some money.
Fu Siyue’s face grew even more sinister. He said nothing, got into the car, and sped away.
He Xia called out after him a couple of times for appearances’ sake, but when Fu Siyue disappeared from view, she slowly returned to the living room.
Nan Shiqing had already risen from her seat. “Mom, they…”
With the servants present, she still had to put on an act.
He Xia was distracted, but now she came to herself and spoke quickly, “Let’s get you back to your room to rest.”
Because her health was ‘poor’ these days, going up and down the stairs was inconvenient, so she now lived on the first floor.
Mother and daughter entered the room and closed the door. Only then did He Xia speak with suspicion. “Something’s off.”
“What’s off?” Nan Shiqing looked at her mother in confusion. Even though she was nearly fifty, her mother’s face was still unlined, and she always turned heads when she went out. She was determined to be just as youthful in the future!
He Xia frowned slightly and explained what had just happened. “Fu Siyue saw Nan Shiqing’s Ferrari and immediately asked if I had bought it for her.”
“What? Then where did she get it?” Nan Shiqing was completely puzzled. “If it wasn’t Fu Siyue’s money, how could she afford it?”
“I remember when she complained to me before, she said Fu Siyue never gave her money—just enough for food and basic needs. She never needed much cash while living in the Fu household.” He Xia’s brows were tightly knitted, her eyes filled with deep doubt. “So I’m wondering, after the divorce, did Fu Siyue give her a sum of money? But when I probed just now, Fu Siyue’s expression was ugly—clearly he didn’t. So where did Mu Yinyin’s Ferrari come from?”
Nan Shiqing was equally confused, her brows furrowed. “Aside from Siyue, where else could she get money?”
He Xia chuckled. “What if she’s latched onto some wealthy patron?”
“Huh?” Nan Shiqing shook her head instantly. “Impossible. We know how much she loves Fu Siyue. How could she possibly be with another man?”
He Xia smiled again. “After enough disappointments, when she gets nothing from this man, but other rich men come along and are willing to lavish gifts on her, wouldn’t she be tempted?”
“This…” Nan Shiqing suddenly felt uncertain, but the next moment, her eyes brightened. “Then, we must let Siyue know about this! We can’t let them rekindle their feelings. All I hope for now is that they really get divorced at eight o’clock tomorrow!”
“Let’s hope it’s not some trick of Mu Yinyin’s.” He Xia sighed softly. The two said nothing more, and the room fell silent.
…
The following day.
Seven o’clock.
Mu Yinyin had already finished packing. She had all the necessary documents ready and was preparing to leave.
Morning rush hour traffic would be heavy, but fortunately, the civil affairs bureau wasn’t far from where she lived.
Mu Yinyin got into her car and headed straight for the bureau.
Today was the day of her divorce. She could finally let go of the past and would never again be bound by feelings. From now on, she could live for herself, without anyone standing in her way.
But—
Just as she was approaching the civil affairs bureau, her phone suddenly rang.
Mu Yinyin glanced at the caller ID, her expression tinged with confusion, but she answered.
“Is something wrong?”
“Boss, something’s happened!!”
Hiss—
…
Eight o’clock.
Fu Siyue arrived punctually at the entrance of the civil affairs bureau, but so far Mu Yinyin had not shown up, nor had he seen the Ferrari.
He frowned, impatience flickering in his eyes.
He detested waiting for anyone, but forced himself to hold out until five past eight.
Still, there was no sign of Mu Yinyin. His brow tightened.
He took out his phone and dialed Mu Yinyin’s number.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy. Please try again later…”
The mechanical female voice sounded, and Fu Siyue irritably hung up.
Another five minutes passed.
He called again, but it was still busy.
Fu Siyue couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation.
Yesterday he had really believed Mu Yinyin wasn’t playing hard to get—he thought she genuinely wanted a divorce. Yet now, at the crucial moment, she deliberately failed to show up.
Heh.
How could he ever believe Mu Yinyin had any backbone?
This woman was the height of hypocrisy. How could she possibly give up the Fu family’s wealth?
He’d been so naïve!
In a fury, Fu Siyue tossed aside his phone and drove away.
At eight thirty, Fu Siyue still hadn’t arrived at the company.
His phone suddenly rang.
Seeing that it was Mu Yinyin calling, he hung up without hesitation.
But moments later, the phone rang again.
Fu Siyue, annoyed, picked up.
Before he could speak, Mu Yinyin’s calm voice came through. “Sorry, I was delayed by something just now. I’m at the civil affairs bureau now. Did you come?”
Fu Siyue’s expression darkened as he replied coldly, “I never wait for anyone. Mu Yinyin, do you think I’d keep waiting when you weren’t here at eight?”
Mu Yinyin’s face stiffened, but she patiently explained again, “I really was held up just now. I’m at the bureau right now.”
“Mu Yinyin, stop playing games. I will never fall in love with you.” Fu Siyue’s voice was laced with unmistakable impatience.
Mu Yinyin’s expression soured, but since she was at fault for missing their appointment, she maintained her composure. “I don’t need you to love me. I just want a divorce. I’m right outside the bureau. If you don’t believe me, I can video call you.”
Fu Siyue laughed bitterly. “Do you think I have nothing better to do than let you toy with me?”
Mu Yinyin: “…Then what do you want?”
After she spoke, the line fell silent.
She knew she shouldn’t have missed the appointment, but she truly had something urgent to handle. After answering the call, she had parked by the roadside, dealt with matters on her laptop as quickly as possible, and then hurried to the bureau.
After a five-second pause, Mu Yinyin spoke again. “Once the divorce is done, we’ll never have to cross paths again. Isn’t that for the best? Just this once, Fu Siyue—I’m asking you for this one favor. After today, I promise I’ll never bother you again.”
Her voice was sincere, her attitude earnest, as if she was desperate to sever ties for the sake of the divorce.
Her demeanor only made Fu Siyue’s expression grow darker.
Before he could respond, another call came through on his phone.
Fu Siyue frowned, but decided to answer.
