Chapter 8: Getting Into His Car on a Rainy Day
When Nan Zhi's mother was young, she was a renowned anchorwoman in Ning City. Nan Zhi had always dreamed of following in her mother's footsteps, sitting at the anchor desk. She studied broadcasting and hosting abroad.
Yanran called Nan Zhi to tell her that NCTV was currently recruiting a new anchor.
"Beautiful Zhi Zhi, I heard from godmother that you're going to the TV station for an interview today, right?" Little Kai, sitting on his hospital bed in a blue-and-white checked hospital gown, swung his long legs excitedly as he asked.
Little Kai was much taller than other children his age. Nan Zhi vaguely remembered that the man she slept with that night was very tall. Although Little Kai looked like her, his height was probably inherited from that man.
"Beautiful Zhi Zhi, Kai knows he's good-looking. You've been looking at me for three years and you're still not tired of it?"
Nan Zhi was amused by his words. She pinched his delicate, rosy cheek with slender fingers. "Mommy will never tire of it in her lifetime."
"Wow, our beautiful Zhi Zhi can say sweet words now," the little one laughed, his eyes shining as if studded with brilliant stars. "Can I have a kiss and a hug?"
Nan Zhi planted a kiss on Little Kai's tender cheek. "Of course, and I say it only to you, Kai."
"Beautiful Zhi Zhi, yesterday I chatted with the nurse. She said my eyes don't look like yours. Are my eyes like those of the bad daddy who slept with you but won't take responsibility?"
Nan Zhi smiled and pressed her lips together. "Maybe. I don't remember exactly what he looked like anymore."
"Then you should look for someone with eyes like mine. If you find someone who looks like me, maybe that's him."
Nan Zhi was amused by his childish words. She got up and went to the bathroom to change clothes. When Little Kai saw her, his eyes lit up. "Beautiful Zhi Zhi, you look so pretty today!"
Though she was already the mother of a three-year-old darling, Nan Zhi was only twenty-two, at the age of blooming youth. No matter what she wore, she was fair-skinned, beautiful, and radiant.
Little Kai made a fist in encouragement, his voice childish and earnest. "Beautiful Zhi Zhi, good luck! Kai is looking forward to seeing you sit at the anchor desk one day."
"Mommy will do her best. Thank you, sweetheart."
...
The sky was heavy with clouds, dark and foreboding. A storm was about to break.
As she got onto the overpass, it seemed as if heaven itself was trying to keep Nan Zhi from reaching the TV station—the taxi broke down.
...
A black Rolls-Royce drove onto the overpass, hazard lights flashing, windshield wipers moving furiously. Wei Lin glanced at the foggy, rain-soaked road. Suddenly, a slender figure dashed in front of the car. He almost hit her, but thanks to his skill, he braked just a few centimeters away.
He looked in the rearview mirror at the man in the back seat, who had just returned from a business trip and had not rested for days. The man's dark, narrow eyes had already opened, and his lips, crimson and seductive, parted slightly. "What's going on?"
Wei Lin was about to answer when someone knocked on the window.
He rolled it down, and a wave of cold, damp air swept in. Seeing the young woman outside, Wei Lin's eyes flashed with surprise.
"Young lady, is there something you need?"
Nan Zhi looked at the nervous, slightly adorable Wei Lin and smiled gently, dimples appearing at the corners of her lips, her beauty dazzling. "Hello, the taxi I was in broke down and can't be fixed quickly. I'm rushing to an interview. Would you mind taking me somewhere I can catch a ride?"
Wei Lin glanced at the back seat. He intended to ask the man behind, but Nan Zhi misunderstood, thinking he was inviting her to sit in the back.
She opened the car door, put away her umbrella, and prepared to get in—only to see that the back seat wasn't empty. There was a man sitting there.
