Chapter 6: Four Years Later
Four years later.
Inside a large shopping mall in Ning City, a woman with skin as pale and flawless as porcelain and long, wavy hair cascading over her shoulders drew the attention of many. An oversized pair of sunglasses rested atop her head, framing a face as exquisite as a painting; beneath her elegant, straight nose, her lips were vividly red and alluring.
She wore a mint-green trench coat cinched at the waist and slender high heels, her tall and willowy figure moving with a grace that surpassed even professional models.
She pushed a shopping cart, in which sat a little boy wearing a baseball cap, denim overalls, and a plaid shirt in British style. Though the cap shaded his eyes and nose, the sight of his rosy lips and lovely chin alone revealed him to be an adorable child as handsome as could be.
“Mei Zhi Zhi, the list of things we need to buy has already been made by Brother Kai,” the little boy said, lifting his head to look at the striking young woman.
The moment he looked up, many nearby caught a glimpse of his features. His delicate, sculpted face was like a porcelain doll’s: large, jet-black eyes, a high, straight nose, and soft, rosy lips. Aside from his skin being almost unnaturally pale, he looked as though he had stepped straight out of a comic book as a little prince.
People couldn’t help but wonder: was this pair mother and son, or siblings? Their looks were simply too exceptional.
Nan Zhi looked at her darling child and a radiant smile curved her lips. “Brother Kai, you’re amazing.”
“Zhi Zhi, little Kai!” came a clear, lively voice. Nan Zhi spotted her best friend Xia Yanran waving at her and Xiao Kai.
“Mei Zhi Zhi, it’s godmother,” Nan Xiao Kai said, his beautiful face breaking into a dazzling, heart-melting smile.
Yanran hurried over and at once enveloped Nan Zhi in a big hug. The two had been desk mates throughout three years of high school, forging a bond as strong as comrades-in-arms. Though Nan Zhi had gone abroad four years before and they hadn’t met in person since, they still video-called every couple of weeks, so Yanran already knew all about Nan Xiao Kai.
After embracing Nan Zhi, Yanran immediately scooped up the irresistible Xiao Kai.
“Godmother, you’re hugging me so tight I can barely breathe,” he said.
Yanran laughed and released him, but her gaze remained fixed on his face. “Zhi Zhi, these genes are incredible! Can I reserve Xiao Kai as my daughter’s future boyfriend?”
“Godmother, you’re so beautiful—surely your future boyfriend will be even more handsome than me!” Xiao Kai’s dark eyes sparkled as he turned to Nan Zhi. “Xiao Kai belongs to Mei Zhi Zhi alone.”
Yanran felt a pang of envy pierce her heart. Oh my, not only is Zhi Zhi’s little Kai gorgeous, he’s so devoted to her too. Jealousy was killing her!
“Zhi Zhi, what am I to do? I just want to steal your Brother Kai away!”
Nan Zhi smiled. “No problem, as long as Brother Kai is willing.”
Yanran pouted. “Hmph, you two just keep flaunting your affection!”
After finishing their shopping, Yanran insisted on taking Nan Zhi and the little one to the revolving restaurant for a feast. “I don’t care—you didn’t even tell me you were coming back today, so I couldn’t pick you up at the airport. I’m angry! You have to let me treat you to a big meal, or we’re not friends anymore.”
Half an hour later, the two women and the boy arrived at the top floor of Ning City’s only seven-star hotel.
At the entrance to the revolving restaurant, a waiter stopped them. “I’m sorry, the restaurant is fully booked for a private event this evening.”
Yanran was speechless. Who could be so extravagant as to book the most luxurious restaurant in Ning City?
Seeing Yanran’s mix of frustration and disappointment, Nan Zhi reassured her. “It’s all right, Yanran. We can eat somewhere else.”
Yanran pouted. “I really want to meet that rich big spender.”
With no other choice, the trio headed downstairs. At the front entrance, Yanran said, “Zhi Zhi, you and my godson wait here. I’ll go get the car.”
“Okay.”
Nan Zhi and Xiao Kai stood behind a marble pillar. As Nan Zhi stepped away to take a phone call, Xiao Kai leaned against the pillar, his long, dark eyes darting around beneath his cap.
Suddenly, a figure emerging from the revolving doors caught Xiao Kai’s attention. The man wore a long black overcoat, perfectly pressed trousers that accentuated his long legs, and his short, jet-black hair was impeccably styled. His sharply defined face was as chiseled as a sculpture, with deep, hard contours and piercingly cold eyes. His very presence exuded an innate, commanding aura that made people instinctively wary.
