Chapter 38: Thank You for Your Hard Work Today
Nan Zhi took out a milk candy, raised her hand, and offered it to Mu Sihan. “This is for you.”
Mu Sihan sneered disdainfully. “Do you think I’d eat something like that?”
Hearing the voices of the old lady and the housekeeper approaching the dining room, Nan Zhi felt a sudden jolt of anxiety. Seeing that the man remained unmoved and continued to firmly hold her in place, she bit her lip, lifted his hand, and placed the milk candy in his palm.
“Young Master Mu, could you please let me go?” Clearly, being forceful with someone so arrogant and volatile was futile, so she could only try to coax him.
Mu Sihan’s fingers tightened, the candy pressing into his palm.
He glanced at the woman’s face, flushed red—whether from anger or embarrassment, he couldn’t tell—and her beautiful eyes, shimmering with a thin layer of moisture. He pulled his lips into a smirk and let out a low chuckle.
The old lady and the housekeeper pushed open the kitchen door and entered. Nan Zhi, back to the entrance, stood before the counter, her cheeks burning as she pretended to be busy arranging a fruit platter.
Mu Sihan, meanwhile, leaned lazily against the refrigerator, one long leg bent, toying nonchalantly with the candy between his fingers.
After unwrapping the milk candy, he crumpled the wrapper into a ball and tossed it at the nape of the woman’s neck as she bowed her head.
The old lady entered just in time to witness this scene. She immediately frowned, her face stern as she scolded her wayward grandson. “Sihan, don’t bully Miss Nan.”
Mu Sihan arched an eyebrow, pinched the creamy candy between his fingers, tossed it high into the air, opened his mouth, and caught it effortlessly. He chewed, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Tsk, it’s actually ridiculously sweet.
The old lady watched her grandson, already in his late twenties yet sometimes as childish as ever. She shook her head in exasperated affection, wagging her finger at him. “You!”
Turning her gaze to Nan Zhi, who was focused on arranging the fruit platter, the old lady reflected that since coming to the old house, the girl had quietly prepared dinner without needing any assistance. She looked delicate and refined, as if she’d never done housework; when the housekeeper brought her in, the old lady had even worried she might burn down the kitchen.
Yet walking past the dining room earlier, the dishes she’d glimpsed—each one vibrant in color and enticing in aroma—had even whetted her own appetite, despite her age and fading interest in food.
More importantly, after cooking, the girl hadn’t left the kitchen in a mess. The counters were spotless, the ingredients neatly arranged. It looked nothing like a kitchen that had just seen a flurry of activity.
The old lady nodded to herself, a gentle smile forming. “Miss Nan, thank you for your hard work today. Come out and eat with us!”
“I’m sorry, Madam. I still have something to do shortly,” Nan Zhi replied, turning around with her head slightly bowed.
The old lady assumed Nan Zhi was embarrassed because Mu Sihan had returned. She hurried to reassure her, “Don’t mind that rascal. He never bullies girls. After dinner, I’ll give him another scolding.”
“Madam…”
Mu Sihan slid his hands into his pockets, arching an eyebrow as he looked at Nan Zhi. “The old lady wants you to stay, so stay. What, are you afraid I’ll eat you?”
Nan Zhi shot the man an angry glare, but he no longer looked at her. Instead, he draped his long arm over the old lady’s shoulders. “Grandma, weren’t you always urging me to find you a granddaughter-in-law? Well, I’ve found one.”
At his words, Nan Zhi stumbled, nearly losing her footing.
Surely, he couldn’t be referring to her as his so-called granddaughter-in-law?
Once she’d finished arranging the fruit platter, Nan Zhi drew a deep breath before stepping out.
Unable to refuse, Nan Zhi stayed to dine with the grandmother and grandson.
The dishes she’d prepared suited the old lady’s taste, and with her grandson home, the elderly woman was in high spirits. Throughout the meal, she and Mu Sihan chatted and laughed together, disregarding any strict family rules about silence at the table.
