Chapter 40: Oh No, I’ve Angered Him Again
Unwilling to answer him, she set down the fruit platter and glanced at the two large hands wrapped around her waist. Her brows knitted tightly, and her voice was cold and sharp. “Mr. Mu, I will not be your woman.”
She took a deep breath, trying to reason with him. “To be honest, I already have a boyfriend.”
Had it been any other man, hearing that her heart already belonged to someone else, he would have tactfully backed off. But the arrogant man behind her merely gave a cold command, “Then break up with him.”
He released her waist, his broad hand gripping her shoulder as he turned her to face him. His dark eyes looked down at her imperiously. “If you’re with me, I can give you anything you want.”
He was a businessman, skilled in negotiation and well versed in what women desired most.
In a world awash with materialism, few could resist the lure of power and profit and remain untempted.
“I can give you a blank check. Fill in any amount you like.”
Nan Zhi gave a cold laugh. “Mr. Mu, are you trying to keep me as your mistress?”
“You can think of it that way,” he replied, looking down on her with the arrogance of a king bestowing a rare favor, as if a woman being kept by him was the greatest honor imaginable.
Nan Zhi fought the urge to slap him again, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m sorry, but I love my boyfriend. Even if you offered me a hundred million, I wouldn’t leave him.”
Clearly not expecting such a direct refusal, the man’s face darkened. He pinched her chin with his long fingers, his dark gaze dangerous. “You say you have a boyfriend, yet your brother tries to sell you to me? If this is just some coy game, it’s time to end it.”
Nan Zhi frowned, not understanding what he meant.
Her brother tried to sell her to him?
“Are you insane? I suggest you see a doctor,” she retorted.
Nan Zhi picked up the fruit platter and prepared to leave, but just as she passed him, the platter was kicked out of her hands. The next moment, her slender wrist was seized, and she was forcefully thrown back against the kitchen counter.
Her lower back struck the edge, and she gasped in pain.
The man gripped her wrist hard enough to crush bone. “Do you realize you’re courting death?”
Nan Zhi wailed inwardly.
It was over.
She’d angered him again.
She knew full well he was a maniac whose temper was uncontrollable, yet she’d provoked him anyway.
But he really had gone too far. She could endure for a while, but not forever.
Just as she thought he might try to strangle her again, he suddenly released her wrist, his face grim and cold as he slammed the door and left.
When the old lady entered the kitchen, Nan Zhi was cleaning up the scattered fruit.
“Miss Zhi, did Si Han bully you?” The old woman was kind, but Nan Zhi didn’t want any further ties with this family, nor did she wish to speak ill of that man. She shook her head. “I knocked it over myself. Mr. Mu didn’t bully me.”
After tidying the kitchen, Nan Zhi bid farewell to the old lady and left as quickly as she could.
The old lady returned to her room, only to find Mu Si Han rummaging through her cabinet. She cleared her throat. “Do you have feelings for Miss Zhi?”
Mu Si Han didn’t turn around, his voice cold and hard. “No.”
“Really? I saw her eyes were red. Did you bully her?”
Her eyes were red?
Mu Si Han’s brows drew together, and the gloom on his face eased a little. “Grandma, where’s the bruise ointment that Old Man Zhong left behind?”
“What do you mean, ‘Old Man Zhong’? The Zhongs have been a family of physicians for a century—money can’t buy that ointment. What do you want it for?”
“Yan Zhi’s woman was hurt by him. He asked me to borrow some from you.”
