Chapter 97: The Three Dragons of the Way and the Legendary Pokémon

Chen Ou shook his head and said, "This isn't such an extraordinary secret. Even if I revealed the method, it's nearly impossible to actually succeed. So I'm just asking."

Then, Chen Ou straightened up, his expression serious. "The legend of the Three Dragons of the Way is true. Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem—these three legendary Pokémon were born from the division of the legendary Unova Dragon God. Reshiram inherited the faith in truth, Zekrom inherited the pursuit of ideals, and Kyurem inherited the dragon god's body."

Everyone present gasped at the revelation. Though none of them had faced a legendary beast directly, the power of such creatures was no mystery. The dragon god, who even after splitting remained as three incredibly powerful legendary Pokémon—how mighty must it have been when whole?

"But nowadays, so-called ideals and truth represent the two sides of yin and yang, while Kyurem stands for harmony."

As he spoke, Chen Ou felt awkward. How did Kyurem harmonize? By defeating both the black and white dragons? Yet, according to Chen Ou's research, this was the most reasonable explanation.

Of course, those who had never seen the black and white dragons nor Kyurem were unaware of Chen Ou's inner complaints.

"If one wishes to unite the Three Dragons, reviving the Dragon God of the Way, the method is simple. Find a person who meets both Reshiram and Zekrom's requirements, have them willingly fuse into Kyurem's body, and of course, the Gene Splicer used for harmony is indispensable."

Chen Ou spoke as if it were easy, but none of those present were naïve. They understood why Chen Ou wasn't afraid to share this information.

To have the divergent black and white dragons both agree, and then have them willingly merge into Kyurem's body, losing themselves—that was something almost beyond human capability.

Looking at the others, Chen Ou forced a smile and quickly added, "Hey, hey, you're not seriously considering awakening the Dragon God of the Way, are you? Forget it. Without a chosen hero, the black and white dragons remain at peace, but once their chosen ones—the hero of truth and the hero of ideals—are selected, then it's truly the season for battles."

That was the truth. Without a chosen hero, the two dragons mostly stayed out of trouble, but once their avatars were chosen, fighting was inevitable.

At least it was better than in Hoenn... The pair over there—Mindless and Grumpy—would fight upon waking, then sleep, then fight again...

Yew digested Chen Ou's words and asked, "Then how did the Dragon God of the Way split? How can he, after splitting, still form relatively complete Pokémon bodies? Or is it that legendary Pokémon, in essence, are not truly Pokémon?"

Chen Ou was startled; he hadn't expected Professor Yew to delve so deeply. Yet, knowing the legend of the Three Dragons, such questions were only natural.

To split into three, each still an incredibly powerful legendary Pokémon—how astonishing!

It truly made one question the Dragon God's very nature.

"This touches upon the classification of legendary beasts," Chen Ou said, not intending to hide anything now. "Since we've come this far, there's no point in secrecy."

"What classification?" This was Professor Oak's question.

To be honest, Professor Oak was indeed the leading figure in current research, but his focus was quite different from Chen Ou's. In a sense, Chen Ou's studies complemented Oak's.

Oak studied the relationship between ordinary Pokémon and humans, while Chen Ou filled in the gap regarding legendary beasts, humans, and their environment. The two, mentor and pupil, together made a complete study of Pokémon-human relations.

"Some legendary beasts are born from the world itself, with Arceus and Mew as their representatives. Others are created by Arceus and other deities, such as Entei, the three legendary birds, the three mushrooms, even the time-space dragons and Giratina. Then there are outsiders, like Deoxys, and the Ultra Beasts from the Alola region, who are also outsiders."

Professor Oak pondered for a moment and said, "You still haven't answered the most important question. What is the true nature of legendary beasts?"

"Their true nature is Pokémon," Chen Ou answered with great seriousness.

"But Pokémon can't explain how the Dragon God of the Way split into three," Oak countered immediately.

The others, including Professor Yew, realized they couldn't get a word in—now it was a discussion, or rather a debate, between Chen Ou and Professor Oak.

Neither felt awkward, since they often conducted research together at home; now that they were in their element, it was almost a domestic scene.

"The Dragon God's division is tied to its powers. Every legendary beast possesses unique abilities; this, as you've seen with Celebi, you know."

"Indeed, Celebi can traverse time and space, but her domain is the forest. If the forest disappears, Celebi will be weakened, even perish."

"The Dragon God is similar. Its domain is yin and yang. If the balance of yin and yang cannot be maintained, it splits—there's no doubt. And since the Dragon God was essentially a fusion of three, once its power divides into three, it becomes three Pokémon. That's only natural."
