Chapter 113: Growlithe Defeated—Entei’s First Battle in the Arena! (Please Subscribe and Vote!)
Growlithe stared at the Mega Alakazam before him, feeling that there was one thing he absolutely had to say from the bottom of his heart: for fuck’s sake.
This move had Chen Ou’s style written all over it. Normally, Alakazam’s Mega Evolution was unquestionably meant to be saved for Entei. That was precisely why Growlithe had dared to act so recklessly.
But this unexpected turn of events had completely wrecked Growlithe’s little plan.
Growlithe had dared to provoke Alakazam in its normal state, but now that it had become Mega Alakazam, did he still dare?
Growlithe cast a helpless glance at Chen Ou, who was cheerfully waving at him from the edge of the field, and every hair on his body stood on end.
Then Growlithe really did dare to provoke it.
What a joke. Never underestimate Growlithe’s convictions!
Growlithe unleashed a Flamethrower straight at Alakazam. He made no attempt to control the shape of the flames, allowing them to spread outward like a blazing curtain.
Naturally, Alakazam, sitting cross-legged in midair, paid it no mind. The spoons behind it made a full turn, and a powerful shockwave blasted Growlithe’s Flamethrower apart.
There was no denying it—Mega Evolution was truly an enormous enhancement…
At the very moment Alakazam scattered the Flamethrower, it spotted Growlithe charging toward it under cover of the flames. Alakazam immediately activated the Future Sight it had set up earlier.
A psychic shockwave emerged from thin air and slammed into Growlithe from the side.
Growlithe let out a cry of pain and then… transformed into a golden sphere of light that dissipated into the air.
“Substitute!” Sabrina stared at the scene in surprise. She had not noticed when Growlithe had used the move.
“Inside the flames!”
Sabrina and Alakazam realized it at the same time. The scattered flames had completely vanished, yet a massive red fireball still hung there. The instant Alakazam understood what was happening, a Growlithe shot out of the fireball.
Flames wrapped around its teeth.
Fire Fang!
Seeing that there was no way to dodge, Alakazam simply wrapped its arm in psychic power, forming an invisible yet solid arm guard. It intended to take the attack head-on. After all, Mega Alakazam was now at the pinnacle of Elite Four level. Taking a Fire Fang head-on would be no challenge.
But the moment Growlithe’s teeth clamped down on the psychic arm guard, Alakazam sensed something was wrong…
The arm guard did not feel as though it were being burned, as the psychic wall had earlier. Instead, it was being sliced apart like a hot knife through butter.
Growlithe sank its teeth firmly into Alakazam’s arm.
“Alakazam!”
Alakazam let out a howl of pain and blasted Growlithe away with a point-blank Psychic.
The attack struck Growlithe solidly, sending it flying like a torn sack. Yet in the instant before it was hurled away, a vicious smile still appeared at the corner of its mouth.
Chen Ou did not wait for Growlithe to fall to the ground. He drew a Poke Ball and recalled it in midair.
Bai Ci, who had been sitting in the stands, could no longer remain seated. She tumbled down from the spectator area and rushed onto the field. She hurried to Chen Ou’s side, took Growlithe’s Poke Ball from his hand, and then shot him a fierce glare.
Holding the Poke Ball in both hands, she picked up Chen Ou’s backpack and ran back to the stands. She released Growlithe, found a pink bottle of Hyper Potion in the backpack, and immediately began administering emergency treatment.
Growlithe stuck out its tongue and licked Bai Ci’s hand, signaling that she need not worry too much.
Heartbroken, Bai Ci stroked Growlithe’s head with her left hand while continuing to spray the Hyper Potion with her right.
Chen Ou, meanwhile, looked rather awkwardly at Bai Ci and Growlithe as he scratched his head.
“That was Crunch, wasn’t it?” Sabrina’s cool voice drifted over.
She first used her psychic power to calm the furious Mega Alakazam, then asked, “Was it?”
“Yes. Growlithe used Crunch. The reason Alakazam mistook it for Fire Fang was because of my ability.” Chen Ou admitted it quite readily.
He was cheating.
Heaven knew that without cheating, how could he possibly have sent Growlithe to fight Mega Alakazam? What kind of heartless trainer would do that?
Sabrina nodded. When she had seen flames filling Growlithe’s mouth, her first reaction had also been Fire Fang. It was simply the natural result of ingrained habits of thought. After all, Chen Ou’s ability was something no one had ever really seen before. Who would have thought that even Crunch could be made to look exactly like Fire Fang?
It also served as a warning to Sabrina. Chen Ou’s Fire-type moves might not actually be Fire-type moves at all. Techniques such as Fire Fang and Fire Punch could in reality be Crunch, Mega Punch, Psycho Cut, or something similar.
With such tricks, the phrase “impossible to guard against” was no exaggeration. One could not afford the slightest carelessness. A super-effective move landing on them would inflict tremendous damage.
None of Chen Ou’s Pokémon’s moves could be trusted anymore…
Seeing that the two powerhouses had finished their conversation, the referee announced, “Growlithe is unable to battle! Alakazam wins! Challenger Chen Ou, please send out your next Pokémon!”
Chen Ou stroked Chimchar’s head, then pointed toward Bai Ci to signal that Chimchar should go find her.
Chimchar met Chen Ou’s serious gaze, nodded, and ran toward the stands where Bai Ci was waiting.
Chen Ou drew the last Poke Ball from his belt.
Looking at it, he smiled and said, “Welcome to the League, Entei.”
With that, Chen Ou hurled the ball forward.
“Come forth, Entei! Bare your fangs!”
Sure enough, a man remained a chuunibyou until the day he died.
In the end, Chen Ou had still given Entei an embarrassingly theatrical entrance line.
A mass of flames burst from the ball. Amid a shower of fire, Entei emerged with the dignity and imposing presence of a Legendary Pokémon. It gazed calmly and proudly at Mega Alakazam, its eyes brimming with fighting spirit.
At that moment, Alakazam could no longer be described as merely brimming with fighting spirit. It was like a barrel of gunpowder that had finally been ignited. Its aura and oppressive force rose in wave after wave.
It had been toyed with so thoroughly by a Charmeleon and a Growlithe. It was nothing less than humiliation!
Yet because of its Trainer’s orders, it had been forbidden to use Mega Evolution against them. And even after Mega Evolving, it still had not received its Trainer’s enhancement.
For an Alakazam accustomed to fighting with cheats enabled, this was extremely difficult to adjust to.
But now, standing before one of the three Legendary Beasts—Entei—it could finally fight with all its strength!
Sabrina closed her eyes as well, fully mobilizing her psychic power to strengthen Alakazam.
She wanted to have an all-out battle with Chen Ou. She had heard somewhere that the emotions between Trainers were meant to be conveyed through battle.
Then, Chen Ou, feel everything I want to say to you through this battle!
