Chapter 27: Disciplining the Scoundrel
Yun Yihe heard the commotion and came over to see what was happening, just in time to witness the scene. Her jaw nearly dropped in shock. "Wait, Xia Xia, since when did you get this fierce?"
Shen Mengxia immediately spotted Yun Yihe at the doorway and shouted to her, "Call the police!"
That single cry turned the entire situation into chaos. Some of the group rushed toward the door without hesitation, trying to stop Yun Yihe from making the call, while others charged at Shen Mengxia and Ye Huaiting like hungry tigers, their aggression palpable.
For a moment, the shouts, arguments, and footsteps blended into a cacophony of noise and confusion.
Onlookers began to scatter, fleeing the scene. As if on cue, security guards and police arrived almost simultaneously.
By the time they entered, the room had quieted considerably. Shen Mengxia was seated on the sofa, chatting and laughing with a room full of men, even singing.
"The heroine is really standing her ground now."
"All that training in boxing and taekwondo wasn’t for nothing."
"Xia Xia is so cool, love her! Love her!"
"So cool. Chen Yibo, protect me."
"Her skills don’t match that petite frame of hers at all, but I love watching it."
"Did you see those admiring looks from the big guys? I want some of that, too."
The gossip-hungry chat comments popped up again, eager to stir the pot.
When the police stepped inside and took in the scene, they quickly understood what had transpired and asked, "Was this settled privately?"
"Yes, officer. All settled. The guys just got drunk and were messing around," explained a burly man who claimed to be Qiao Wanwan’s brother.
The officers then asked the injured Ye Huaiting and the other young men if they needed assistance.
"No, we’re fine."
"No help needed."
Everyone declined aid, so the police made a brief formality and left.
"Xiao Yi, you should head out first. I need to take this guy home," Shen Mengxia told Yun Yihe. Just as she reached out to pull Ye Huaiting up, Yun Yihe leaned in close, whispering in her ear, "You owe me a big explanation."
Then, raising her voice, she called back to Shen Mengxia, "Alright, take care of yourself," before waving off gracefully and walking away.
Shen Mengxia shook her head helplessly and then heaved Ye Huaiting up with effort. He was timid and not at all tough. After finally getting him into the car, she was out of breath.
"Xia Xia, you can drive now? You’ve changed," Ye Huaiting remarked, half as a question, half as a musing.
"You haven’t changed at all—still the same scoundrel," Shen Mengxia snapped back, still fuming over his words at the karaoke bar.
"It seems Ye Huaiting realizes he’s not worthy of Xia Xia," the chat remarked.
"Xia Xia has become someone beyond his reach."
"Wait, you two, what happened here?"
"I’m a huge fan of Xia Xia."
"Xia Xia! Xia Xia!"
"Come on, spill the story."
Today’s comments were certainly full of gossip. Shen Mengxia sighed, wishing the chatter away, when Ye Huaiting said, "Don’t dismiss it so quickly. Just think about it."
"What? Sorry, I was distracted and didn’t hear that. Say it again."
"I’m saying we should get back together…" Before Ye Huaiting could finish, Shen Mengxia slammed on the brakes. Her expression turned serious and focused as she stared at him for a long moment. Then she said, "You should have just beaten him to a pulp earlier. I’ve seen plenty of scoundrels, but someone as shameless as you is rare. Give it up now, or else I swear…" She clenched her fists and mimicked a fierce scowl, threatening him with a fierce gesture right in front of Ye Huaiting.
Ye Huaiting quickly made a shushing gesture and dared not say another word.
