Chapter 10: The Engagement Banquet You Cannot Escape
What? What on earth is going on? The flood of information overwhelmed Mengxia Shen, leaving her dizzy and bewildered.
She widened her eyes in disbelief as she stared at the barrage of scrolling comments before her, secretly wondering: could the heroine they were talking about actually be her?
She sat there in a daze, trying to process the shocking news. After a long moment, she snapped back to reality and decided to try communicating with the mysterious comments.
“Can you hear me?” Mengxia Shen carefully asked the screen, her voice trembling slightly.
But aside from the rapidly flashing words filling the screen, there was no response.
Then the comments resumed:
“Heroine, don’t attend their engagement banquet at all costs.”
“This second female lead is a bit twisted, insisting the heroine disappear on her own engagement day.”
“The second female lead has a warped personality; she must kill the heroine during the engagement banquet, and she specifically chose a hotel with a darkroom to hold it.”
“Our Xiaxia is still just a child, come on.”
“What kind of idiot author wrote this? Other heroines have a protagonist’s aura, but hers dies right at the start while the second female lead takes over.”
The comments continued to chatter noisily.
She realized that those comments couldn’t hear her. She must be the heroine in the novel they were discussing.
Though still somewhat skeptical, since it concerned her own life, she chose to believe it.
She remembered the comments saying Qiao Wanwan would kill her at the engagement banquet and that she must avoid going.
So she hurriedly packed a few changes of clothes, planning to stay at school for a few days.
She called her driver and rushed to the school dormitory. The dorm supervisor was quite surprised. “Who did I think it was? Miss Shen, what made you decide to stay in the dorm?”
Mengxia Shen glanced at the sarcastic supervisor, unwilling to engage, and pushed open the dorm door. The three girls in her room grew a bit flustered.
Two of them scrambled to pack up the things on her bed, while the other reached out to take what she was holding.
Except for the days of military training, she had never stayed in the dorm before. Seeing them bustling about, she felt a bit awkward and said, “It’s nothing. Don’t bother yourselves. I’ll just be staying a few days.”
As she quietly tidied her bed, she muttered to herself. Strange, she hadn’t noticed earlier in her rush, but now the comments had disappeared again.
At that moment, her phone rang. “Hello, is this Ms. Mengxia Shen?”
“Yes, speaking. Who is this?”
“I’m from the Dongshan Branch of Haijing City Police. We visited your residence last time.”
“The DNA test results are in. You and Ms. Mengqing Shen are indeed biological sisters. We’ve already informed Mr. Fu, and now I’m letting you know personally. The report should have arrived at your residence.”
“Thank you. I understand.”
Just as Mengxia Shen hung up, her phone rang again.
“Xiaxia, where are you going so late?” The caller was none other than Yanchen Fu.
“Big brother, I’m just moving back to the school dorm for a couple of days. You know, the thesis defense is coming up.”
“The police told you, right? They found your real sister. Grandpa said that since tomorrow is Huai Ting’s engagement banquet, he wants to bring your sister back and introduce her to everyone. I’ll send someone to pick you up.” Yanchen Fu spoke in a tone that brooked no refusal.
Mengxia Shen took a deep breath, as if summoning her courage, then stammered, “Bu... but... ah, forget it! It’s really nothing serious. You don’t have to come get me. I can manage on my own. Don’t worry!”
While speaking, she waved her hand as if to convince him further, yet her slightly trembling voice and anxious expression betrayed her true feelings.
Sitting at her desk, she rested her chin in her hand and pondered for a long time, but no reasonable excuse came to mind to justify refusing the engagement banquet.
Still, the thought of finally reuniting with her long-lost sister filled her with hope.
It seemed attending this engagement banquet was inevitable.
