Chapter Twenty: Striking Unexpectedly! Consecutive Kills!
“Ding!”
“Host shows kindness to others, immeasurable merit!”
“Merit points +10!”
The system’s notification arrived, albeit belatedly.
“I thought killing these people wouldn’t grant any merits!” Yu Fei muttered to himself.
At this moment, the system panel was still open, and he witnessed his merit points rise from fifteen to twenty-five.
Yu Fei had never fully understood how the system judged merit points, mainly because he had only recently obtained it and had been confined to this laboratory, lacking opportunities to experiment.
Only the earlier test involving Alice had made him realize that trying to cheat the system for merit points was likely futile.
Now, all that remained was constant exploration.
Changing others’ fates, helping others live better or survive—these earned merits.
Killing zombies also granted merits.
Slaying humans... as just proven, could also grant merits.
In fact, killing members of an assault squad granted even more merit points than individual zombies—each zombie only gave one point, while an assault squad yielded ten points, averaging two points per person.
However, Yu Fei felt this was not absolute; it likely had little to do with whether the target was alive or dead, but more connected to the degree of their wrongdoing.
“It’s well known that Umbrella Corporation isn’t a force for good...”
Working for such a company, especially performing all kinds of “cleanup” duties, meant the assault squad members bore considerable guilt.
With this in mind, Yu Fei glanced at James beside him.
“What’s wrong? Any problems?” James instinctively felt a chill on his scalp.
Could the big shot suddenly get carried away and take me out too?
Fortunately, the next moment, someone came to his rescue.
“All done already?”
Reynard and his group rushed out of the carriage.
They looked at the five corpses on the ground with mixed emotions.
Especially the assault squad members, who felt a deep sorrow.
Knowing they had been abandoned was one thing; seeing it with their own eyes was another.
“There’s not much time. Everyone, change into their clothes!”
“All right!”
Alice, Matt, and the others quickly donned the assault squad uniforms.
Yu Fei and James also shed their original clothes and wore those of the fallen assault squad members.
Though the outfits looked identical, subtle differences existed—unfamiliar people might not notice, but those acquainted would immediately see.
---
“Before they realize what’s happened, I’ll first take care of the assault squad inside the mansion. You all stay here and don’t wander around.”
Yu Fei spoke firmly.
“Why don’t we come with you? Strength in numbers! It’s too dangerous for you alone!”
Alice said anxiously.
The others quickly voiced agreement.
“Yes, we’ll go with you!”
“No, I’m less conspicuous alone. If you come with me, it’s more likely to cause problems!”
Yu Fei shook his head decisively.
“Don’t worry! These five on the ground were taken care of by me. As long as they aren’t grouped together in squads, they’re no problem.”
He looked at James, who understood immediately and said,
“I trust Avery! He has absolute strength! We shouldn’t get in his way!”
“Alright then,” the group reluctantly agreed upon seeing that their two strongest members shared this view.
Still uneasy, Yu Fei pulled James aside and asked him to keep a close watch on Alice and Matt—to make sure they didn’t accidentally wander off.
“I got it.”
James nodded, promising to keep a strict eye on them.
Yu Fei trusted James’ capability, and without further hesitation, took Kaplan’s handheld computer and left.
The group watched as Yu Fei departed from the first platform.
Once Yu Fei’s figure disappeared, Alice couldn’t help but ask,
“Are we really going to let him act alone? What if something happens to him?”
Though she knew Yu Fei was powerful, she remained deeply concerned for his safety.
The others also grew restless after hearing this.
Seeing this, James warned them once more not to act on their own and disrupt Yu Fei’s plan.
James’ authority quelled the unrest among the assault squad members.
Although Alice and Matt were somewhat dissatisfied, under James’ control, they could only obediently stay put.
...
Inside the mansion.
Hiss!
The glass wall slid open.
Yu Fei, clad in the assault squad uniform, stepped out slowly.
“That’s a member of Edward’s squad!”
“He seems to be holding the Red Queen mainboard!”
“He's coming toward us!”
---
In a corner, several assault squad members were discussing.
“This isn’t quite what we planned. Should we act now?”
“We should report to the supervisor! He’s holding the Red Queen mainboard—if something goes wrong, the supervisor will blame us…”
“Fine! Let’s inform the supervisor and let him decide!”
If it were just Yu Fei alone, daring to break the plan, they would have acted immediately.
But now, with the Red Queen mainboard in his hands, they hesitated, unsure of what to do, and decided to consult their supervisor.
Yu Fei, having noticed everything, gave them no chance.
When he saw they were about to report, he sprinted toward them.
“Bad!”
The assault squad members realized the gravity of the situation and prepared to fight back.
But their reaction was too slow!
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Five consecutive shots rang out.
Yu Fei swiftly eliminated them in one swift strike.
“Ding!”
“Host shows kindness to others, immeasurable merit!”
“Merit points +12!”
With a similar number of enemies and comparable strength, this squad granted Yu Fei twelve merit points.
“As expected, merit points aren’t closely tied to the nature of the person!”
“The key factor is how much evil they have committed or are about to commit.”
Yu Fei thought of the zombies.
If all the people in the Hive Lab were good, that was impossible; but if they were all evil, that wasn’t the case either.
That meant some among them were good, or at least hadn’t committed evil.
Yet killing them still granted merits, showing that merit points weren’t solely linked to evil deeds.
At least, ‘degree of evil’ was not the only influencing factor.
“Enough. I’ll deal with the other assault squad quickly.”
Yu Fei decided not to ponder further on merit points.
After finishing this squad, he planned to head to the mansion’s last assault squad.
Just then, a voice suddenly sounded.
