Chapter 37: The Disturbance (Part One)

“A pass?” The bald officer froze for a moment, then immediately understood. He hurriedly nodded. “Yes, of course we have one.”
“Is there any procedure I need to go through?” Luo Feng asked. He was not particularly surprised by the officer’s answer.
Ordinary people who had never entered the circle of martial artists knew very little about it. Once they became part of that world, however, obtaining such information became much easier.
For example, in the world today, there were nine publicly known psychic warriors who followed the Beast Tamer path. Eight of them were overseas. Only one was in Huaxia—a general-level Beast Tamer.
Since Huaxia had a Beast Tamer, even if there was only one, there had to be regulations governing them. Ordinary martial artists already possessed privileges far beyond those of normal people, to say nothing of psychic warriors, who were even more powerful and rare.
“Please wait a moment, sir. Huaxia hasn’t had a Beast Tamer appear in many years, so I’m not entirely familiar with the exact procedure. I’ll need to report this to my superiors and apply for a pass on your behalf,” the bald officer said apologetically.
“Will it take long?” Luo Feng frowned slightly. If the process required more than half a day, he would simply return to the base city and leave Black Crown in the wilderness for the time being.
Seeing Luo Feng’s furrowed brow, the bald officer grew anxious and hurriedly said, “No, it won’t. We’ll have everything settled within an hour at most!”
If Luo Feng had merely been a Beast Tamer capable of controlling general-level monsters, the bald officer would not have been so anxious. But Luo Feng could control Black Crown, a top-tier high lord-level monster. Experts of such strength could be counted on one hand throughout all of Huaxia.
Moreover, Luo Feng had not obtained a Pet Beast Pass through some other channel. Instead, he had come directly and openly to the nearest martial artist supply base. The bald officer guessed that Luo Feng probably had not joined any other organization.
If he had joined a major power such as the Extreme Martial Arts Hall, the Thunder Dojo, or the HR Alliance, there would have been no need for someone of his stature to personally handle such a trivial matter as a pass. With a single word from him, someone below would have eagerly taken care of every detail.
“A powerful independent expert with no affiliation…”
The value of those words was astonishing. If they could draw such a person into the military’s ranks… Just thinking about it left the bald officer trembling with excitement.
That alone would be a tremendous achievement!
Even if he failed, merely forming a favorable connection with such an expert would still count as no small accomplishment.
“Sir, you can call your pet beast over first. Our base can provide it with a large quantity of fresh monster flesh.” The bald officer even thoughtfully made arrangements for Luo Feng’s mount.
Luo Feng did not refuse. Powerful psychic energy radiated from his body and connected with Black Crown, who was flying through the sky two kilometers away. Through their mental link, he said,

“Come find me. Keep your aura under control and don’t frighten or harm the people here.”
If Black Crown unleashed the full power of its cry, it could shatter the windows of skyscrapers from more than a thousand meters in the air.
At closer range, its voice alone could easily kill large numbers of ordinary people, or even low-level martial artists.
…
Having received the order, Black Crown flew toward the supply base warily. As a powerful lord-level monster that had survived in the wilderness for many years, it knew all too well how terrifying human weapons could be.
One careless move, and even it could be killed instantly.
Fortunately, its journey went smoothly. Under the astonished and envious gazes of the officers and soldiers, Black Crown descended safely beside Luo Feng.
The entire landing raised no more than a little dust.
Yet everyone knew that if this overlord of the skies went berserk, even a hundred thousand soldiers would be unable to stop it.
“Lord Luo Feng, please come with me,” the bald officer invited.
As for Black Crown, after Luo Feng communicated with it and told it not to cause trouble, it remained where it was, waiting to be fed.
“Bring over the corpse of a Four-Tusk Wild Boar.”
The tall officer remaining behind waved a hand and directly ordered his subordinates to fetch the corpse of a primary general-level monster.
When martial artists went out hunting, they could generally bring back only the valuable materials from a monster’s body. The military, however, possessed a complete and powerful logistical system capable of recovering entire monster corpses.
Some of those corpses were suitable for consumption and would be transported into the base cities, where even ordinary people could buy and eat the meat. Monster flesh contained an abundance of energy, and eating it regularly could improve one’s physical constitution.
Of the remaining corpses, some became research materials, while others were used in the manufacture of genetic agents, restorative medicines, weapons, equipment, and countless other products.
In short, monster corpses had many uses and immense value.
Before long, a military vehicle transported the corpse of a Four-Tusk Wild Boar larger than an elephant and placed it in front of Black Crown.
Under everyone’s expectant gazes, Black Crown merely glanced at the skinned, tuskless, mutilated carcass. Its blue eagle eyes revealed an almost humanlike disdain.
“They expect me to eat such inferior food?” Black Crown sneered inwardly, then simply closed its eyes and began to rest.

Ever since reaching adulthood, nothing below the level of an advanced general-level monster had appeared on its menu.
Seeing the giant creature’s dismissive expression, the tall officer left behind at the base wore an awkward look.
Had they just been rejected?
“To build a good relationship with this distinguished Beast Tamer, the tall officer could only brace himself and ask, “Do we have any higher-level monster corpses in storage?”
“Yes, sir. A corpse of an intermediate general-level Four-Tailed Tiger Cat arrived yesterday,” replied a soldier from the warehouse, approaching quietly.
“…Go and bring it here.” The tall officer nodded slightly.
The military had no shortage of soldier-level monster corpses. Large quantities could be obtained at regular intervals, and sometimes so many accumulated that they had to dispose of a portion.
Corpses of monsters above the general level, however, were considerably rarer. Firearms posed little threat to general-level monsters. Even the largest-caliber sniper rifles could only endanger primary general-level monsters. Intermediate- and advanced-level general monsters were essentially unafraid of firearms.
Therefore, unless heavy weapons or laser cannons were deployed, corpses of intermediate- and advanced-level general monsters could generally be obtained only through hunts conducted by martial artists.
…
Meanwhile, under the bald officer’s arrangements, Luo Feng sat down in a luxurious suite. Someone promptly brought him tea and refreshments.
Luo Feng took a change of ordinary clothes from his tactical pack and entered the bathroom. He had not bathed for more than twenty days. He had not felt particularly uncomfortable while living in the wilderness, but the moment he returned to human territory, his entire body began to feel unbearably grimy.
…
“Put me through to Commander Zhao’s emergency line!” the bald officer ordered his trusted aide in a deep voice.
The call was placed shortly afterward.
Because it was an emergency line, the other side answered almost immediately.
