Pei Qizhou found it impossible to fully focus on the two people before him. Glancing at his phone, which had yet to receive a response, he stood up.

"Xiao Yi, Daddy has something to take care of. You go play with Mommy Miao for a bit; I'll be back soon," he said, holding Pei Yi with a smile.

"Where is Daddy going?" A clear look of displeasure appeared on little Pei Yi's face.

"Daddy is going to check on Mommy," Pei Qizhou replied, not wanting to lie to him.

Upon hearing the word "Mommy," Pei Yi’s discontent only grew.

"Why go see her?!" He wriggled out of Pei Qizhou's arms. "Mommy Miao is my mommy! I don't want that bad mommy!"

He nestled into Xu Miao's arms, his tone filled with nothing but aversion toward Yao Shan.

"Be good, Xiao Yi. Mommy is sick, so let Daddy go see her," Xu Miao said with feigned gentleness, though her heart was already filled with resentment.

Although Pei Yi remained reluctant, he found it difficult to refuse once both of them had spoken.

When Pei Qizhou appeared at the doorway of the hospital room, he happened to witness the two inside chatting and laughing. His expression, previously filled with worry, turned instantly gloomy.

Chu Xun? Pei Qizhou was startled; he remembered him well, of course. He knew perfectly well that Chu Xun held deep feelings for Yao Shan. Yet, he never expected Chu Xun to return at such a time.

Pei Qizhou’s brow furrowed, his displeasure impossible to mask. He took a deep breath, pushed the door open, and stepped into the room. His gaze locked directly onto Chu Xun, as if trying to see right through him.

Chu Xun sensed Pei Qizhou’s arrival and turned his head. As their eyes met, an invisible tension seemed to permeate the air. The atmosphere in the room turned exceptionally taut, as if a storm were about to break.

"Mr. Pei," Chu Xun greeted him politely, though his tone was devoid of warmth, bordering on cold.

Pei Qizhou merely nodded, ignoring the greeting, and walked straight to Yao Shan’s bedside.

"Why didn't you answer my call?" he demanded, his voice thick with accusation, clearly dissatisfied with her behavior. "Was it because you were with him?"

Yao Shan was taken aback; she hadn't expected such a question. She glanced at Chu Xun, then shifted her gaze back, answering calmly, "I was undergoing an examination." Her tone offered little explanation, stating only the facts.

"Couldn't you have called back?" Pei Qizhou’s brow furrowed deeper, clearly unsatisfied with her response. His tone carried a note of reproach, questioning her sincerity and attitude. He turned toward Chu Xun, his voice laced with suspicion: "Dr. Chu, is it really necessary for a doctor to remain in a patient's room at all times?"

Facing the challenge, Chu Xun remained unruffled, maintaining a poised and calm demeanor. He offered a slight smile and replied, "I am simply fulfilling my duties, Mr. Pei. As a doctor, I have a responsibility to ensure my patient receives the best possible care."

A flash of disdain crossed Pei Qizhou’s eyes. He leaned slowly toward Yao Shan, a dangerous aura radiating from him. He chuckled contemptuously, his tone dripping with sarcasm: "Yao Shan, are you actually sick? Or are you just faking it to be with this man?"

Yao Shan’s face turned paper-white; she had never expected such hurtful words from him. Her heart was filled with boundless grievance and anger, yet her body was too weak to even muster the strength to retort.

Seeing Yao Shan’s reaction, Chu Xun immediately stood up, placing himself between Pei Qizhou and Yao Shan without hesitation. His expression was firm and composed, like an unshakeable mountain.

"Mr. Pei, your language is far too aggressive," Chu Xun said, his voice calm yet undeniably firm. "What Yao Shan needs now is peace and care, not baseless accusations." His tone carried a gravity that suggested Pei Qizhou had crossed a line.

Pei Qizhou’s face darkened further; he had not expected such a direct rebuke from Chu Xun. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, followed by his fists clenching tightly as he struggled to control his emotions. His breathing grew rapid, as if he were suppressing a volcanic rage.

"Dr. Chu, you seem to have forgotten your place," Pei Qizhou said in a low, cold voice. "As a doctor, you should know what should and should not be said."

Chu Xun did not back down. He looked Pei Qizhou straight in the eye and replied, "I am well aware of my duties, Mr. Pei. I am here to care for my patient, not to engage in your personal grievances."

"Are you sure you're just speaking from a doctor's perspective?" Pei Qizhou asked in a low tone. "Everyone knows what you feel for Yao Shan."

Chu Xun’s brow arched slightly. He didn't answer directly, saying instead with calm composure, "Mr. Pei, this is not the time to discuss personal feelings. Yao Shan’s health is what matters most. If you truly care for her, you should provide a peaceful environment rather than creating tension and unpleasantness here."

"So you’re saying I should just leave and give you two lovebirds some alone time?" Pei Qizhou raised his voice. "Don't forget, Yao Shan is my wife!"

He finally understood why she was so desperate for a divorce—she had already found her next partner. That made him even less inclined to grant her wish.

*Lovebirds...*

The word sounded truly ironic to Yao Shan.

"You’ve already brought a woman into our home, and yet you have the audacity to call us lovebirds?"

She hadn't wanted to make a scene, but Pei Qizhou had forced the issue. Did he really want to drag his affair with Xu Miao out into the open?

Though Yao Shan’s voice was faint, every word was weighted with power. She looked directly at Pei Qizhou, refusing to back down.

The air in the room seemed to freeze; the tension between the three of them reached its peak. Pei Qizhou’s expression shifted from gloom to fury; he hadn't expected Yao Shan to bring up Xu Miao at a time like this. His clenched fists tightened and loosened, but in the end, he did not explode.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his emotions.

"Yao Shan, what are you implying?" Pei Qizhou’s voice trembled; clearly, her words had struck a nerve.

Chu Xun stood close to Yao Shan, fearing that Pei Qizhou might do something to harm her.

"Some things are better left unsaid," Yao Shan replied, turning her face away to hide the tears welling in her eyes.
