Chapter 40: The Truth Surfaces
Seeing that Li Sen was also of one mind with him, Li Fengyu felt somewhat more reassured. Immediately, the Xinmin Group also swung into action. At this juncture, Li Fengyu's calm mind and superb dexterity began to exert their influence. By this time, Li Fengyu had already taken every possibility into account and prepared two alternative courses of action in his mind: if Lin Chu's father intervened, that would naturally be best; if he chose to stay out of it, there would be no alternative but to reach a private agreement with the market manipulators of the silver futures. Adopting an ambiguous stance, Li Fengyu prepared to side with whichever party at a moment's notice, for he now had no way out.
Three days later, news finally came from Lin Chu's side. Lin Chu had been pacing back and forth outside the office door before Li Fengyu finally called him in. Sighing, Lin Chu said, "My father refuses to get involved in this matter. He merely stated that he can provide some funds, but will have nothing to do with anything else." Gritting his teeth, Li Fengyu replied, "Understood." Although Li Fengyu had already prepared himself mentally, his spirits still sank.
The following afternoon, news arrived from Li Sen's side as well. Unlike Lin Chu's update, Li Sen brought triumphant news. However, instead of returning directly to the company upon stepping out of his car, Li Sen went straight home and sent a message to Li Fengyu, asking him to come to his house at midnight as he had important intelligence to report. Staring at his phone, Li Fengyu was utterly baffled, yet he did not press for details.
By the time Li Fengyu reached the entrance of Li Sen's residential complex, it was nearly one o'clock in the morning. Not a single soul was outside, and the silence was dreadfully oppressive. Li Fengyu silently cursed to himself: "What on earth is Li Sen playing at? Summoning me to his house past one in the morning. It's so quiet, truly terrifying, and enough to send a chill down one's spine." Little did Li Fengyu know at that moment, however, that the intelligence Li Sen was about to report and the experiences that followed would make him feel even more terrified, sending an even deeper chill down his spine.
Entering the compound, Li Fengyu paced his way upstairs and stopped before a door on the third floor. Knocking gently, he said, "Li Sen, it's me, Li Fengyu." The moment the words fell, the door was swiftly opened, showing that Li Sen had been waiting for a long time. Stepping inside, Li Fengyu slumped onto the sofa, yawned, and said, "Damn you, Li Sen, what kind of trick are you pulling? Why aren't you sleeping at this ungodly hour?"
Without answering him directly, Li Sen walked over to a drawer, handed some documents to Li Fengyu, and said, "Fengyu, the Gu Group truly lives up to its reputation as a major conglomerate with massive influence in both Shanghai and Hong Kong. They actually managed to trace it: the mastermind behind the silver market manipulation is the Liu Group, a very established enterprise. Crucially, I've also uncovered a major secret." "What secret?" Li Fengyu asked. Li Sen replied, "The Liu Group and the Lin Group—meaning Lin Chu's father—have clashed in business on numerous occasions."
Even the dullest person would have figured it out by now. Li Fengyu instantly connected Lin Chu's father's demands, the anomalies in the silver market, and Chen Yuxuan's car accident. This meant Lin Chu's father had been using them as pawns. This was also why Li Sen had asked Li Fengyu to his home to make the report: to guard against Lin Chu, since they had no way of knowing whether Lin Chu was genuinely oblivious or merely putting on an act all along. Filled with utter hatred for Lin Chu's father, Li Fengyu transferred that resentment onto Lin Chu as well. Trembling as he looked at the documents in his hands, Li Fengyu said, "Regardless of whether Lin Chu knows or not, all subsequent actions must be kept secret from him for now. Until this crisis is resolved, not a word of tonight's events is to be mentioned to anyone."
