“Doctor Lu is so good, and yet she’s still not satisfied!”

“Sis, you’re really heartless. Doing something so cruel—how is Doctor Lu supposed to face anyone after this?”

“Better to settle it early—apologize if you must, get a divorce if you must, but don’t just sit there doing nothing…”

…

“Let me through… please step aside!” Su Wanyue was pressed so tightly by the crowd that she couldn’t move. She watched helplessly as the man’s handsome face, cold and indifferent, flashed past the second-floor window and disappeared.

“Husband!”

Su Wanyue stomped anxiously and, abandoning all dignity, shouted at the top of her lungs, “Lu Zetao! Come down here now!”

After what felt like an eternity, a tall man in a white coat finally descended from upstairs.

For a moment, the entire hospital lobby fell silent.

Lu Zetao stood at one meter eighty-seven, his jet-black hair thick and straight, framing a smooth, pale face with sharply defined features; beneath his sword-like brows, his eyes sparkled like stars, emitting a captivating light; his high nose bridge and thin lips exuded a striking elegance and handsomeness.

Su Wanyue licked her lips, feeling her throat dry.

No wonder the original owner was willing to do anything to have him—he was incredibly good-looking.

“Husband… wait for me.”

Desperately pushing through the crowd, Su Wanyue squeezed her way toward him.

But the man ignored her words and paid no attention to her embarrassment or whatever was happening at that moment.

“Divorce. I agree.”

He said coldly, six simple words, in front of everyone.

Su Wanyue stopped pushing forward, coming to a halt two meters from him, eyes wide with disbelief.

She had rushed all this way to explain herself clearly, only to get this response?

Even a dog deserves a moment to bark before being beaten, but he didn’t even give her that chance—it was too much.

Across from her, the man’s eyes were cold and deep, devoid of any emotion. If there was any feeling at all, it was pure annoyance.

Yes, extremely indifferent, like a stranger.

It seemed her misunderstood actions today had already angered him; just listening to an outsider’s one-sided story, he had condemned her.

Men were truly all the same—none worth trusting!

“Fine, divorce it is. Whoever doesn’t divorce is a fool!”

Spitefully, Su Wanyue snapped back and turned to storm out of the hospital, her braid swinging high, angrier than the man himself.

She had regarded him as her only support, wanting to prove her innocence, but he simply didn’t care about the truth—in fact, he never cared about her at all.

What meaning did such a marriage hold?

Su Wanyue headed toward the village. When she ran over earlier, it hadn’t seemed far, but after twenty, maybe thirty minutes of walking back, the distance felt immense…

A group of children played along the railway tracks by the roadside, laughing and tumbling happily.

Su Wanyue immediately recognized one ragged little boy with a runny nose and toes poking out of his shoes—Xiao Xing, her half-brother.

In the distance, a train roared closer, belching black smoke.

“Xiao Xing! Get off! It’s too dangerous!”

Su Wanyue shouted, hurrying toward her brothers.

Hearing the familiar voice, Xiao Xing turned his head to look.

Su Wanyue rushed forward and grabbed him off the tracks just in time.

In the blink of an eye, the train thundered past; had she been a moment later, his life would have been lost.

“You scared me to death!”

Her heart still pounding, Su Wanyue brushed dust off her brother.

“If I’d been one step slower, the train would have hit you! No more playing here, understand?”

Her simple-minded brother giggled, letting Su Wanyue lead them home.

Back at her mother’s house, after her stepmother Liu Zilan had settled the mentally challenged son, she anxiously asked about Su Wanyue’s situation.

Su Wanyue recounted everything in detail.

“Running away isn’t a long-term solution; it’s good that the misunderstanding is cleared up,” Liu Zilan said, the wrinkles on her forehead more pronounced under the lamplight, her worried eyes nearly spilling over, making Su Wanyue’s heart ache.

The original owner had often gotten into trouble; although her stepmother came into her father’s life later, she had worried for her no less, only to be treated like dirt in return, with the brothers bearing the brunt as well.

Thinking of this, Su Wanyue’s eyes grew moist, and she lowered her head in guilt.

“Daughter, every family has its troubles. You acted impulsively just now, but how will the villagers see you later?”

“Don’t worry. If it really comes to it, I’ll have your father go to your in-laws’ house to set things straight… Nobody should be treated like this.”

After repeated encouragement from Liu Zilan, Su Wanyue returned to the Lu household that night, determined to talk things over properly with Lu Zetao.

“I’m back.”

Taking a deep breath, Su Wanyue rubbed her cheeks and forced a smile.

But before the smile could reach her eyes, the door—which should have opened easily with a gentle push—creaked as if something was stuck inside.

The light was on inside; clearly, someone was home.

Why lock the door at a time like this?

Could it be… deliberately to keep her out?

Locked outside her own home?

Su Wanyue found it hard to believe but raised her hand and knocked patiently again.

“Lu Zetao, open the door.”

“I know you’re in there, please open up…”

For some reason, a bizarre scene from a 21st-century video suddenly flooded her mind, making her nearly burst out laughing despite her frustration and stifling emotions.

“If you don’t open the door, I’m climbing in through the window tonight!”

“I’m falling down your chimney!”

“I…”

With a sudden “whoosh,” the door remained shut, but a window by the corridor slid open.

“Su Wanyue, are you never going to stop?” Lu Zetao’s cold voice came through. “I’ve already decided to divorce you. Don’t come back here.”

He started to close the window, ignoring her.

Fortunately, Su Wanyue had a thick skin and grabbed hold of the window’s edge.

“Husband, please let me in. I want to explain properly—I don’t want a divorce.”

If it had to end, it shouldn’t be so humiliating. It wasn’t her fault!

“No need.”

A cold reply followed.

Then with great force, he tried to shut the window, nearly pinching her fingers.

Though he seemed startled and eased up at the last moment, Su Wanyue jumped back, startled, like a drop of water hitting hot oil, instantly flustered.

“You’re crazy!”

Fuming, she crouched down, grabbed a handful of dirt from the corner, and threw it at the window. “Eat dirt!”

Unexpectedly, her mother-in-law, Zhao Guihua, suddenly pushed the window open, mouth wide as if ready to scold. Just then, the dirt flew straight into her open mouth.

“Ugh, I spit! Spit, spit, spit… You!”

Only then did Su Wanyue realize what had happened and looked at the old woman’s face turning all kinds of colors. She struggled to hold back her laughter, wanting to explain but it was already too late.
